Abstract

The consumption of sugary beverages has been on the rise now and ever. Even with the negative consequences that accompanies the action, the popularity seems to only increase and never subdue. This is said to be extremely relevant among livings with no age boundaries; whether it be a child or a senior. This study, seeks to investigate the factors on consumption of sugary beverages among UTAR students (Kampar Campus). The study adopted a quantitative approach and utilized survey method to collect data. Google Form questionnaires were distributed to UTAR students residing in Kampar Campus through both online platforms such as WhatsApp, Instagram, and Microsoft Teams and physical approach around campus by displaying QR code. Stratified random sampling and convenience sampling were applied under probability sampling. Through the use of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software, Multiple Linear Regression Analysis was performed. A total of 273 usable results were collected back and with the use of G*Power Software, a minimum of 119 respondents were needed. Results showed that parental influence and environmental accessibility have a direct effect on the consumption of sugary beverages while taxation shows negative correlations. The findings contributed to the limited studies on the topic of drivers to sugary beverages consumption and serves as new insights and foundation for business organizations, government, policy makers, and future researchers. Based on the findings, it is recommended for parents or guardians of minors to increase awareness of their actions in order to reduce the consumption of sugary beverages among youngsters all in the name of a healthier generation. Equally important, policy makers should consider increasing tax rates or form new policies to better influence the change as current interventions are at a loss.
