Abstract
This is a research paper detailing not only the development of my group’s final product assignment for the final year project but also an analysis of the impact of music on player immersion within story-driven games. While there are analyses of music and its interaction with player immersion in video gaming, there is not as much detailed about specifically its implementation within the narrative design of said games. The research within this paper involves a questionnaire passed around to video gaming audiences and inquires about their opinions and experiences with soundtracks and their impact on player immersion within game worlds and narratives. It is clear based on this research that there is a clear causal link between elements and qualities of a soundtrack and the emotional response within players; specifically in areas of melody, harmony, instruments used and genre. This research could prove useful to game developers and composers as it lays out the most important elements of a soundtrack that should be cared for when creating an immersive mood for a game.
