Abstract
Background and Objectives: With the increasing prevalence of diabetes mellitus worldwide, understanding the awareness regarding the management of DM is crucial for developing effective intervention strategies. The present research was carried out to study the knowledge and attitude related to diabetes mellitus (DM) among non-diabetic academic staff in a university in Sungai Long, Selangor, Malaysia. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was carried out among non-diabetic academic staff. The purposive sampling method was used to recruit participants who fulfill the inclusion criteria. The instrument was a validated English version questionnaire. Data collected were entered into SPSS Statistics 29.0 for analysis. Descriptive analysis and Chi-square test were used. The level of statistical significance was set as p-value<0.05. Results: A total of 209 non-diabetic subjects participated in this study (57.9% female and 42.1% male) with a response rate of more than 90%. Just over half (51.7%) of non-diabetic academic staff were knowledgeable and nearly two�thirds (61.7%) had good attitude. There was a significant association between knowledge and education level, medical background and family history of DM. Participants with held a bachelor’s degree, had a medical background and a family history of DM showed significant association with knowledge of DM. Conclusion: The study reveals that just over half of the non-diabetic academic staff were knowledgeable regarding DM, and majority exhibited a good attitude. Higher education levels, with medical background and a family history of DM were linked to better knowledge. Targeted education may be needed to improve understanding among others.
