Abstract
This study quantifies the carbon intensity of the oil extraction in the Al-Sharara Field, a major and strategically important oil field in Libya. The research uses a cradle-togate Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach to measure the greenhouse gas emissions at key stages of the operation such as extraction, processing, flaring and transportation. The findings show that the key contributing factors of the total carbon intensity of the field include gas flaring, fuel burning and fugitive methane emissions. The findings have indicated that a significant amount of the associated gas is flared due to the infrastructure and operational constraints, which have significant environmental and health consequences. The study also highlights data and measurement challenges in accurately quantifying emissions, particularly in complex and data-limited cases. To address these issues, the study proposes some mitigation measures including gas utilization technologies, incorporation of renewable energy systems and improved carbon measurement techniques. These have the potential to significantly improve efficiency and reduce emissions. Overall, the study provides an efficient approach to measuring the carbon footprint of upstream oil operations and supports the transition to sustainable modes of energy in Libya.
