    Abstract

This project titled “Horrors of War: Historical Trauma in Game Design” explores the portrayal of historical conflicts and psychological horror within action video game design. Many conventional action games that depict militarism and warfare often prioritise spectacle of combat, military empowerment and action-focused gameplay while overlooking the severity of traumatic consequences, humanitarian crisis and psychological effects of war. This project seeks to investigate the portrayal of war in video games foremost as a distressing and immersive experience rather than entertainment.
