Abstract

Since 2020, Malaysia has been grappling with political instability stemming from shifts in the country’s leadership, leading to a crisis in political legitimacy. This situation has undermined public trust in the Malaysian political landscape. During the period of political turmoil, the implementation of UNDI-18 by the Malaysian government has introduced a new group of first-time voters in Malaysia. These fresh first-time voters have since become prime targets for major political parties and alliances to woo, given their potential to sway election outcomes. On this ground, the study aims to explore the voting intention, political participation, and democracy concept among young first-time voters in Malaysia amidst the recent 4-year political turmoil. Via online survey questionnaire, the study surveyed 275 young first-time voters of various ethnicities from February 22 to March 14, 2024. Findings of the study reveal that Malaysian young first-time voters exhibit a strong intention to participate in voting, evident in their high turnout for the past General Election 15 (GE15), the 2023 state elections, and anticipated future elections. Besides that, this cohort demonstrate a high level of democracy concept. However, most of them demonstrate slacktivism in political participation, primarily confined to passive consumption of political information, with only a minority actively engaging in political action.
